Training For Your Body Type

Everybody can be categorized into one of 3 body types: Endomorphs, Ectomorphs or mesomorphs. Now everybody CAN make some big changes to their bodies when training, but the key is training the RIGHT way for their body types. You need to understand what your weaknesses are and train accordingly. A good way to see what body type you are is to remember what type of body you had as a teenager, and then figure out which type you are. Let me tell you a little bit more about each body types and some suggestions about how to train for each type.

The first body type I’ll go over is the Endomorph. Endomorphs usually have large bones, wide hips and waists, and short muscles. They also tend to gain fat a lot easier than the other types because they have a slower metabolism. So how should an Endomorph train? Their first goal should be to burn calories, since they have slower metabolisms, they should be doing lots of cardio to help keep their metabolism high throughout the day. Training with weights will do a world of good because muscles naturally burn fat faster. You shouldn’t restrict yourselves on carbs too much because endomorphs usually a re less energetic than other types.

The second body type is the Ectomorphs. This is my body type. Ectomorphs are usually skinny and have a hard time packing on weight. I mean, I can eat fast food all I want and STILL not gain 1 pound…But that’s because, contrary to the endomorphs, we have a higher metabolism than normal and high energy levels. So for us ectomorphs to gain some muscle, we need to eat, and eat A LOT. We need more calories, and more protein. Don’t go eating too many carbs because then you’ll definitely start to gain weight, but not the kind of weight you want to gain…If your an ectomorph and your goal is to get some muscle onto your frame, then it’s recommended to restrict cardio work, or avoid it completely. Personally, I do cardio on my off days ( days where I don’t work out ) to limit the calories I burn and keep more of it in my system to help me repair my muscles. I just like doing cardio for the health benefits. It also makes the most important muscle stronger: the heart. So that’s something to think about. Usually when training with weights, you would keep reps low and intense, and weights heavy. You also should not train one body part more than once every 4 days to help it repair properly. After your done with training, make sure you get plenty of sleep as well.

You see the key when your an ectomorph is to do everything in your power to help your muscles recuperate. Since your metabolism is so high naturally, you burn calories faster than a normal person does. So if you eat the same number of calories as another person does, your body is going to burn it faster than them ( unless their ectomorphs too…). That’s why we need to eat more than other body types, so our body gets plenty of calories to work with to put into repairing our bodies. And we need to train less, but harder so we limit the time that we train, hence limiting the number of calories we burn. This is also the reason most say ectomorphs should stay away from cardio; to limit calories burned. It seems complicated, but if you really get it, you’ll see that it isn’t complicated at all.

The last body type is the mesomorphs, the “lucky ones”…They’re naturally muscular with larger bones than most. This is the body type that will gain muscle just by going to the gym and eating normally…They see gains quicker than ectomorphs and endomorphs. This is the best body type if your looking to pack on muscle ( and I envy you…). But even so, you should only train each body part once a week, or else you’ll over train. You should workout with routines that combine high intensity, with reps ranging in the 8-12 reps.

I hope this helps you out a bit. I’ll most likely talk a bit more about each body type in later articles, but it’s an important concept to grasp if your looking to start training. It will definitely help you shape your routines and the way that you train. I know it has for the way that I train and I’ve seen results faster than with my old way of training. So much so that sometimes I wonder if I actually am an ectomorph because I gain so easily now.

Well, happy training!
